Throw a Pre-Trick-or-Treat Halloween Party
5 Min
Trick-or-treating is the main event.
But before everyone heads out with empty candy buckets and very ambitious plans, invite the crew over for a little pregame.
The goal: feed everybody something real, pour the adults a drink, let the kids have some fun, then head out together.
No elaborate Halloween buffet required.
1. FEED EVERYONE BEFORE THE CANDY HITS
This is not the moment for a dessert table.
There will be plenty of sugar approximately 45 minutes from now.
Instead, put out food people can actually eat before heading out the door. Nothing fussy, nothing that requires a fork and knife, and nothing you need to be cooking while everyone is arriving.
PUT THIS ON THE TABLE:
A couple big bowls of Opopop
Start with Super Butter for the guaranteed crowd-pleaser, then add Pumpkin Spice or another favorite for a second option.
Chicken tenders
Buy them prepared and keep them warm in the oven until people arrive. Put out ketchup, ranch, and honey mustard and call it done.
Ham + cheese sliders
Layer sliced ham and Swiss or cheddar onto Hawaiian rolls, bake the whole tray together, then pull them apart when it’s time to eat. Easy to make ahead, easy for kids to grab, and substantial enough for the adults too.
Cheddar + crackers
Go with cubes or slices of mild or medium cheddar and something simple like Ritz or Club crackers. This is not the night for an artisanal cheese board.
Apple slices
Honeycrisp or Fuji, sliced right before everyone arrives. They add something fresh without turning this into a fruit platter situation.
Veggies + ranch
Baby carrots, cucumber rounds, and snap peas. Buy them already prepped if you can.
That’s enough.
You’ve got something warm, something filling, something fresh, and plenty of popcorn to snack on while everyone trickles in.
Most importantly, nobody is starting trick-or-treating on an empty stomach and calling a Reese’s cup dinner.
2. GIVE THE GROWN-UPS A HALLOWEEN DRINK
The kids have trick-or-treating.
The adults can have cocktails.
Keep it easy with one batch drink that people can pour themselves.
SPIKED APPLE CIDER
Pour apple cider over ice and add bourbon or dark rum. Set out cinnamon sticks and apple slices if you're feeling festive.
For a zero-proof version, do cider topped with sparkling water.
Or skip the theme entirely and put beer, wine, and sparkling water in a tub of ice.
Nobody has ever complained that the Halloween cocktail wasn't elaborate enough.
3. GIVE THE KIDS SOMETHING TO DO WHILE EVERYONE ARRIVES
You don't need to fill an hour.
You just need something to occupy that weird stretch of time when half the group is there, three kids are already wearing masks they can't see out of, and someone is asking when you're leaving.
A few easy options:
DECORATE MINI PUMPKINS
Markers, stickers, googly eyes. No carving required.
HALLOWEEN SCAVENGER HUNT
Hide a few plastic spiders, skeletons, pumpkins, or ghosts around the house or yard and give the kids a checklist.
GUESS THE POPCORN FLAVOR
Put a few Opopop flavors into unlabeled bowls and see who can identify them.
CANDY JAR GUESS
Fill a jar with candy. Everyone guesses the number. Reveal the winner before you head out.
4. MAKE LEAVING PART OF THE PLAN
The beauty of this party is that it has a built-in ending.
Pick a trick-or-treat departure time and tell everyone ahead of time.
People arrive.
Kids eat.
Adults have a drink.
Costumes are admired.
Someone inevitably loses part of their costume.
Then everybody grabs their buckets and heads out together.
